Creating characters for games presents many challenges for the 3D artist. Issues such as poly count, flexibility of the rig, art direction, and the game environment itself will dictate the final look of the character. In this DVD, Mayan continues from the head model and design used in Head Modeling for Games, demonstrating the tools and techniques used to create low polygon characters. In this new tutorial from Simply Maya you'll get to learn character/caricature modelling techniques like those used in major TV productions. Based upon character styling used in the Headcases TV show Jason has designed and drawn a caricature of the infamous foul tempered chef, Gordon Ramsay!

The tutorial begins with a look at reference material followed by basic creation of the character/caricature image planes within Maya. Instead of ploughing straight into the modelling of the characters facial features, we begin with the creation of the more simpler elements of the model that serve their purpose as a 'warm up' exercise using mainly polygons and Maya's standard modelling tools and then gradually building up to the more complicated task of creating a characters head from a polygon cube.

Once various parts of the model are complete the uv and texture mapping process is then covered , then its straight into Photoshop to create some 'light' and uncomplicated textures in order to keep to the cartoon styling of the character. The tutorial concludes with all parts of the model being finalised then brought together to form the finished character.

- This is a 20+ hours realtime video tutorial covering concept, modeling, texturing, sculpting, materials, lighting,

rendering and post - the whole process from start to finish.
- Applications used: 3dsmax, zbrush, ps and mr

The lessons show the progress from cube to fully textured, sculpted, rendered head.

We explore modeling techniques
for:
easy and fast head production,
head texturing (normal, mutated and lava covered, in photoshop and zapplin),
sculpting (freestyle and based on texture detail),
model and utility map exporting (normal,cavity,displacement) and finally
rendering (displacement, sss, lighting, final gather settings)

Various stages and the final models,
textures are included in the lesson for further study and manipulation. Useful for both game and film cg.

This isn't a very strong piece of art, but while talking and showing the whole process without skipping steps I

sacrificed some freedom and experimentation so I consider it done and cool for the purpose it was made for.

I use Photoshop, 3dsmax, zbrush and mental ray. Some post in photoshop.

This tutorial takes you through the modeling and texturing of Chaos using 3ds MAX, ZBrush and Photoshop.
